When I first got my horse, Echo, I had a clear routine. I would catch him in the pasture, groom him, tack him up, take him places, and tell him what to do. I was very conscientious to be sure I did everything correctly. Echo did what I asked, but I noticed he did not perform with the effervescent joy he was capable of. One day I simply let go of trying to get Echo to do things. I chose to let him come to me. I just talked with him and groomed him with no restraints, so he could come and go as he pleased. From there we began to build our heart connection.
I made it a habit to let go of my agenda and go to the pasture with unhurried openness, practicing companionship and compassion.
When I did this, it became much easier to catch Echo in the pasture. In fact, he would walk up to me and put his head in his halter. As I let go of striving, I began to have more empathy. I learned to understand his emotions, and together we built the deep satisfaction of partnership. Our relationship continues to grow. It is a beautiful, sturdy, and incredibly rewarding relationship that I cherish.
Leaders who take the time and have the patience to connect in a personal, unhurried way with their teams build followership that
stands the test of time.
